Six high school students are being treated in hospital after ingesting an “unknown substance” in far north Queensland.

The alarm was raised with emergency services just before 10.30am on Wednesday that several students at William Ross State School in Townsville had ingested an “unknown substance” and required medical attention.

Queensland Ambulance Service said six students were taken to Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition.

Police were also called to the school.

The Department of Education told AAP it is investigating the incident.
