Detectives are investigating a collision and shooting on Melbourne’s Hume Freeway on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to reports a car and truck collided at Epping in Melbourne’s outer-north, near the highway’s exit-entry ramp and Cooper Street about 9.30pm.

One of the occupants of the car, a 23-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

A second occupant from the car, an 18-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries consistent with the collision.

The driver of the truck was not injured and remained on the scene.

Investigators do not believe the truck driver was involved in the events leading to the 23-year-old man sustaining gunshot wounds.

Officers at the scene also found a car on fire a short distance away on Cooper Street.

Police are working to determine if the car fire is linked to the shooting and collision.

A crime scene has been established as the investigation continues on Tuesday.
