Sitting in my Sydney office, jacket on and scarf pulled tightly around my neck, the air temperature switching from artificially boiling thanks to the air-con, to freezing cold when the air-con is off – an eternal summer is all I can think about.
So with Expedia’s announcement of its 2025 Island Hot List, it seems it’s time for me to plan a sea change.
Yes, that’s right, the top 10 best islands in the world have been named, using a comprehensive analysis of factors such as Expedia travel data, accommodation rates and quality (based on real traveller reviews), accessibility, air connectivity, weather and seasonality, tourism appeal and traveller safety and inclusivity (informed by travel advisories).
“Powered by real traveller data, the Expedia Island Hot List gives travellers the inspiration they need to plan a smarter island escape,” Expedia travel expert Rebecca Hurley said.
“Island adventurers want standout stays, affordable prices and seamless flight access”.
What’s more, the categories are vast. For example, I personally will be heading to Aruba, named the best island in the world for year-round sunshine (although Expedia also helpfully noted that the best time to travel there for a good deal is in September).
For anyone moving with me, expect arid desert landscapes blended with relaxed Caribbean vibes and plenty of outdoor adventures. Oh, and flamingos, which is all the reason I need.

But perhaps your island holiday is more about making friends? In which case, it’s Fiji for you. It was named the best island (nation?) for community, and there’s definitely something about getting on island time that invites you to slow down and chat with your neighbours more.
Not to mention, Fiji is a leader in regenerative tourism, thanks to coral restoration programs and strong community-based tourism. Add to that luxury island retreats, and you’re laughing.
Or, and this is more than valid, perhaps you travel to indulge in some of the best food in the world? Sardinia in Italy was named the best island for food lovers, with travel interest up 45 per cent since this time last year.
Wander hilltop villages, tasting a cuisine that mixes Italian and Mediterranean flavours. Think seafood, pasta, cheese and the freshest local ingredients.
Without further ado, here are the destinations that made Expedia’s 2025 Island Hot List, so you can start planning your next getaway:
- Aruba (for year-round sunshine)
- Bali, Indonesia (for relaxation)
- Dominican Republic (for adventure)
- Fiji (for community)
- Jamaica (for culture)
- Koh Samui, Thailand (for affordable luxury)
- Maldives (for romance)
- Oahu, Hawaii (for surfing)
- Paros, Greece (for nightlife)
- Sardinia, Italy (for food lovers)
