Social media is abuzz with pop star and actress Lady Gaga’s unusual choice of beverage.
The revelation of the singer’s drinking habits emerged by accident during a ‘lie detector test’ interview with Vanity Fair back in February.
When asked how she orders her red wine, Gaga replied “with maraschino cherries and Diet Coke”.
Since then social media users have has been making, testing and passing judgement on the drink, which turns out to be not as unusual as it seems.
The drink, actually known as a kalimotxo (or calimocho), dates back a century and is currently enjoying a cult following by cocktail lovers.
The kalimotxo originated in Spain’s Basque Country in the 1920s and is widely enjoyed throughout the country – thanks largely to its simplicity and affordability.
The drink, which has been adopted to varying degrees around the world, is made with equal parts red wine and cola, and commonly served with lemon over ice.
As per her interview, Gaga enjoys her version of the drink with Diet Coke and maraschino cherries.
And the verdict from social media critics is largely positive.

According to wine and beverage appreciation site VinePair, the idea of the original kalimotxo may have been to mask flaws in the wine with the syrupy sweetness of Coke.
“Flaws in the wine could stem from poor storage and being exposed to the air (oxidized), overheated, or simply just not being made very well,” it said.
Many social media users who have since tried the unconventional cocktail combination have responded positively.
While there are multiple variations on the classic kalimotxo – including a Texas bar serving frozen kalimotxo – the original recipe is frighteningly simple.
