Kids making it big on social media and earning some cash in the process might seem like a win-win situation.

But new Australian research says there are dark sides lurking underneath the ring light for little ones.

They’re called ‘kidfluencers’ – children who are either solo social media stars, or they could be the children of established influencers.

A new study on the topics has been co-authored by Dr Kate Delmo, who says the rise in mummy bloggers lead to more kids getting involved in their  parent’s social media careers.

According to Delmo, we are now seeing children becoming an extension of their parent’s brands or, sometimes, having social media accounts solely dedicated to them.

This raises ethical questions, particularly if the children are underage.

Under new laws, that came into effect in California this year, parents must establish a trust for their children, forcing them to set aside some of their earnings.

But, in Australia, there are currently no similar laws to protect kids financially.
