Police in the Solomon Islands have intercepted a “narco sub”, the first ever recorded visit of one of these underworld vessels to the Asia-Pacific region.

“Narco” submarines are usually employed to transport large amounts of drugs from Central America into California, and the discovery of one in our region has raised plenty of questions.

The abandoned vessel was discovered last week by Solomon Islands MP Ben Maenu’u during a fishing trip. But the location of the narcotics presumably on board is still unknown.

It’s believed up to $700 million worth of cocaine destined for Australia may have slipped through the Pacific Islands and is en route to breach Australia’s borders.

10 News + presenter Denham Hitchcock takes a deeper look at what this means for Australia’s maritime security and the country’s Asia-Pacific defence partnerships.
