Two men are in hospital with critical injuries after a shooting at Pyrmont in inner-Sydney overnight.

Police say a 49-year-old man and his 23-year-old son were shot in Jones Street shortly before 11:00pm.

One of them had been shot in the head and the other had gunshot wounds to his back.

Both are in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Local detectives and specialist officers from Operation Talon, which is targeting gun crime across Sydney, have been called in to investigate.
