Distraught family members have paid tribute to a “super dad” and his four-year-old son, killed as they walked to buy ice-creams.
Braiden Ashley Timmins, 33, and son Hendrix-hemi Te Rongomau King, 4, were on walking along Green Road in Regents Park, in the city of Logan, south of Brisbane, when they were allegedly struck by a ute just metres from their destination about 11am on Sunday.
Timmins and the little boy, from Crestmead, both died at the scene.
The ute driver, 41-year-old Trevor William Galbraith from Regents Park, was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with two counts of manslaughter. He appeared briefly in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
Flowers have been laid at the crash site, which has been visited by grieving family members. Among the flowers, teddy bears and a toy koala, was a card reading “Super Dad”.
“Uncle Braiden and our little buddy Hendrix-hemi. We love you so much. Always in our hearts,” read another note.
Local Woodridge MP Cameron Dick also visited the scene.
“I went to the scene to lay flowers this morning, as did other members of our local community, and you could see the emotional impact of this tragedy on people’s faces. The pain was very real,” he told the Nine newspapers.
“While there, I spoke to the grandfather, who has lost his son and grandson. I can only begin to imagine the level of grief he is experiencing. But I know our community will rally around those who are suffering.”
As police examined the scene on Sunday, a child’s balance bike was seen in pieces on the footpath, along with a helmet.
Queensland Police said their investigations were continuing on Monday. They are particularly keen to hear anyone with relevant information or vision of the ute prior to the accident.
