UPDATE: A 25-year-old man has been charged over the hit-and-run collision on Friday that left a teenage cyclist with life-threatening injuries in West Melbourne.
The driver of a Jeep 4WD handed himself in to police and has been charged with failing to stop and two other offences and was bailed to appear in court on Tuesday.
The cyclist, Ben Tyrrell,18, suffered serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition in Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Mr Tyrrell, from Cloverlea in Gippsland, was hit by the Jeep while cycling near the intersection of Dryburgh Street and Dynon Road in West Melbourne just before 1am on Friday.
Police said a person travelling in the car that hit the cyclist got out of the vehicle before getting back in and driving away without going to the injured man’s aid.
Early yesterday, his parents made an emotional appeal for the driver to turn themselves in to police.
Julie and Kevin Tyrrell said their son had just finished celebrating completing a flooring job in Melbourne when he was hit.
“We had a knock on the door at 3am this morning, the local police came out,” Julie Tyrrell said.
“I guess it’s something that no-one ever wants to happen, to turn on the light and see two police, you think the worst straight off,” Kevin Tyrrell said.
“We’re pretty wrecked. [The family] all came down [to Melbourne] last night. We’re a close family and all live within 200 metres.”
Police had appealed for the driver of a silver Jeep Compass allegedly involved to contact them.

They said a man from Footscray presented at a police station just after 5pm.
He has been helping Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives with their inquires.
Inspector Stuart McGregor earlier told reporters police didn’t believe the driver was speeding and say he had passed the intersection with a green light.
They said Mr Tyrrell was not wearing a helmet and ran a red light.
