Multiple people struck by vehicle near kids’ playground

A person has died after a vehicle that was involved in a collision struck multiple pedestrians near a suburban playground.

The incident happened at Coleman Road, Wantirna South, in Melbourne’s east, around midday on Thursday.

Victoria Police said it wasn’t believed to be intentional.

It’s believed the vehicle has lost control on Coleman Road around 12.20pm, struck three pedestrians before driving through a fence.

One of the pedestrians died at the scene.

A second person was transported to hospital in a critical condition and a third person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate.

Channel Nine footage showed emergency services setting up a tent to treat patients in a park.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics responded to an incident in Wantirna South at around 12.20pm.

“Paramedics are on scene and their priority is with their patients,” a spokesperson said.
