French jewellery heist nets $14m

A gang of thieves has attacked two heavily guarded vans at a French motorway toll booth, making off with about nine million euros ($A14.44 million) in jewels.

Sources close to the investigation said on Wednesday the heist took place about midnight on the A6 motorway at the Avallon toll booth, about 200 kilometres southeast of Paris.

The local prosecutor from the city of Auxerre told news agency AFP no one was hurt in the robbery.

Police have set up a perimeter with air support in a bid to catch the robbers.
