Russians have put their own patriotic twist on a Facebook application sweeping the globe that acknowledges marriage equality.

Millions of people participated in a trend on Facebook this week, where users overlayed their profile pictures with rainbow colours, to support a historic move by the US Supreme Court at the weekend to recognise same-sex marriage.

But this caused backlash among conservative users in Russia, who opted to display their national pride instead.

After seeing the popularity of the rainbow filter, Russian graphic designer Oleg Chulakov created a Photoshop tool to add the colours of the Russian flag to users’ pictures.

After it was downloaded 5,000 times Mr Chulakov decided to turn it into a web app called ‘Love for the Motherland’.

By Wednesday morning, Mr Chukakov had added a ‘geolocation’ option so people from any country could upload their country’s flag.

Mr Chulakov said the patriotic idea was not anti-gay.

However, many people on social media with the new Russian flag pictures have tagged them as “#pridetobestraight’ and ‘#proudtobeRussian” in both Russian and English, The Independent reported.

On Tuesday, The New Daily reported a Melbourne-based photographer had a couple cancel their wedding booking because he openly supported marriage equality.

Corey Wright used the rainbow Facebook app on his business profile photo, which offended the soon-to-be-married couple who emailed Mr Wright to cancel their booking and demanded their deposit back.
