A Russian passenger plane carrying 224 people has crashed in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula _ a stark reminder of the potential danger that exists when travelling by air.

The Airbus A-321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, lost contact with air traffic control 23 minutes after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh, en route to Saint Petersburg.

Russia has ordered its own investigation into yesterday’s crash.

Light plane crashes into Tokyo homes

The plane had 214 Russian and three Ukranian passengers, and seven crew.

Before this most recent tragedy, there had been 10 major air accidents since 2010 that each claimed more than 100 lives.

The majority of these disasters occurred in the Northern Hemisphere and involved a variety of causes, ranging from bad weather and an overshot landing to deliberate crashing or complete mystery.

The Nigerian-operated domestic Flight 992 was flying from Abuja to Lagos when it collided with a building on approach to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, killing all 153 people on board and another 10 on the ground.
