Earlier, the Arkansas State University tweeted that: “Everyone should evacuate to the west side of the building and clear the area.”

They said the shooter had been spotted inside the university, near its student union building.

Local media KATV reported that students had been getting alerts about the threat, telling them there was a “campus lockdown immediately”.

The campus remained on lockdown after the suspect had been detained.

According to the Arkansas State tweets, the alleged gunman was surrounded 14 minutes later by police, with no shots being fired.

Police confirmed to KATV that the shooter had remained in his vehicle, surrounded by officers, possibly with a shotgun.

The incident reportedly began when the suspect drove into the centre of the campus.

No one was understood to have been injured during the incident so far.

The university said more information would soon be released.

It comes just over a week after two alleged shooters killed 14 people at a Christmas party in San Bernardino, California.
