One teenage boy is dead, and another has lost an arm and is fighting for his life after a horrific jet ski crash on a Sydney river.

Police received reports of people floating in the Georges River at Sylvania, in Sydney’s south, just after 6pm Tuesday.

They arrived to find a 14-year-old boy who had a severed arm. They then found a 15-year-old boy who was unable to be revived.

A crime scene has been established and investigations into the crash have begun.

Sutherland Shire Police Area Command Inspector Tim Carter said the jet ski may have collided with an object in the water.

He said the 14-year-old with the severed arm was found first and removed from the water.

“Police were able to quickly enter the water with the help of NSW Ambulance and remove that boy to safety, where he received further treatment on the boat ramp,” he said.

He was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital by paramedics and was in a critical condition on Tuesday night.

“A further search of the area identified a second 15-year-old boy, deceased,” he said.

“At this stage, it would appear the jet ski has collided with an object or obstacle in the water, which has then thrown these two boys from the jet ski, where they have sustained these injuries.

“The actions of the police officer in the circumstances were heroic.”

A witness told the ABC she was sitting at a nearby boat ramp when she saw a person yelling for help.

“Two ambulance officers ended up swimming out to get him and brought him back,” said Danielle.

“As they were bringing him back, he didn’t look conscious.”

Another witness, Alexandra Farrugia, told the ABC she was walking in the area with her partner when she saw a body floating near the bridge.

“We just saw a lot of lights on the water, a lot of police on the water, and they brought someone up on his stomach,” she said.
